Blanc could scarce be more deceptive than the vast magnitude of the labor which has been exacted in the preparation of this little book For nearly two years we have been, as it was said of John Foster, hard at it, at the rate of a sentence a week. The labor grew in magnitude, and when we hoped it done, it was really but just begun. Had space permitted, it would have been our pleasure to have even greatly enlarged upon part first and part second, and to have added another part, giving the occasions which led the authors to write some of the hymns now dear to all Christians. With the faultiness of the many indexes which we have care fully examined, it would be presumptuous to expect that no im perfections would be found in this, yet it may, with truth, be asserted, that with arduous labor and much care we have sought the greatest accuracy. But few changes have been made in the names of writers of hymns, and these only where the strongest authorities sided against the work of the General Synod's Committee.
