In this unique reader, eighteen social scientists write about their own personal experiences, and those of their families, as members of a particular racial or ethnic group in the United States. Many essays tell compelling stories of how institutional discrimination operates, and how circumstances can persuade people to accept prejudice and discrimination. Several selections written by women who are also members of a racial or ethnic minority show how different types of discrimination interact.
