Excerpt from Minutes of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1888, Vol. 92: With Other Selected and Abstracted PapersThese tests show that the damage does not extend more than 315, inch from the edge of the plate, and this is all that it is found necessary to chip off.It would be beyond the scope of the Paper to notice the numerous tests that have been made to ascertain the value of punched and of drilled holes. The result has been in favour of drilled holes, but the drilling-machines now made are so well adapted for their work, and the plates are so much larger and more difficult to handle than the smaller ones in use before the introduction of steel, that apart from the superiority of drilled over punched holes, the question may be said to have been settled from economic con siderations. The Author has, therefore, only brie¿y referred to the effects of punching and shearing as still in use in a boiler shop, that is, for cutting the edges of plates to the required form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
