They were each placed in succession on a horizontal board, and tilted in a frame to successive angles of inclination to the horizon. The volume of water which was held by each model in its successive positions was accurately measured, by means of a graduated measuring glass.In the first series of experiments the machines were constructed in their simplest form, viz., with one thread only apiece. Four models were made, and the results obtained are shown in Table A, page 9.
