Excerpt from Minutes of Remarks on Subjects Picturesque, Moral, and Miscellaneous, Vol. 2 of 2: Made in a Course Along the Rhine, and During a Residence in Swisserland and Italy, in the Years 1822& 1823 Easter Monday. Left Rome with my two friends in an open carriage, for Frascati: ascending the hill to which is, on the right, a great circular monument, with an excrescence like a dove-cot, - which pile tradition qualifies as the tomb of Lucullus, who had hereabouts, viz. the vicinity of Tusculum, a vast villa. A dull walk to the grounds, rather gratuitously supposed to have been Cicero's, and their villa-ruins: these, with exception of the theatre, are in featureless abasement. The range of Monte Cavo, towering in loftiest outline, and with amplest forest garniture, aback of the swells through which we wandered, was in special contrast to the baseness and bareness of the plain that hence extends, some threescore miles northward. To the left, beyond a sixteen or twenty miles spread of similar misery, shone the sea, with the sun dancing on its surface.
