Excerpt from Minutes of the Eighty-First Annual Session of the Alabama Baptist Association: Held With Sandy Ridge Church, Sandy Ridge, Lowndes County, Alabama, October 12, 13, and 14, 1900 Your Committee would state first that we mourn and are exceedingly sorrowful as we stand with bowed heads and aching hearts, and contemplate the death of seventeen (17) of our members. On the other ha id we rejoice and are exceedingly glad when we reflect that we have been and are still the happy recipients of so many of God's rich blessings. We find that there has been only 74 baptisms against 118 last year. Brethren let us be faithful to our Master and he will take care of the balance. Respectfully submitted, J F Sims, Chairman. Report on Orphans Home. When Mrs. Woodson, in November 1890, made known to the Baptist State Convention her intention to give all her real estate, estimated at $30, 000, for the maintainance of a home for Baptist Orphans, the initial seep was taken. The Home was located at Evergreen, January 16, 1893, and on March 10th, following, in a small rented house, the Home was formally opened, with Mrs. Clara W Ansley as matron. Later the Convention purchased eighty (80) acres of land, 30 of which is in cultivation, 30 in pasture and 20 in woodland. Since the establishment of the Home, there have been gathered into it some 53 boys and 69 girls, and I am informed it is managed as far as possible like any well regulated family. The boys are taught to do farm work and the girls various kinds of housework. Attendance upon church and Sunday school is required and family worship is held each day. The time has come when the people of this beautiful southland, God's great sanitarium, must open their hearts and pocket books to take care of our orphans. Owing to the drouth the field and garden crops were badly damaged. With profound gratitude to God and sincere thanks to the generous friends for their aid, we beg leave to say we are still in need of money to meet the needs of the inmates.
