A word from the author:Having spent years trying to learn Chinese the traditional way, I quickly realised that thelogic behind it was not suitable for me. Therefore, as a teacher I have spent the last 5 years designing a Chinese grammar book which allows a native-born English speaker to go from English grammar to Chinese, rather than the traditional way of starting from Chinese grammarand then relating it to English grammar. In this way, a native-English speaker, who thinksin English, can learn to translate from English to Chinese using this style of learning.Who is this book for? This book is for anyone wishing to learn how to use Chinese for speaking, reading andwriting. The information contained within volumes 1 and 2 is enough to pass HSK 5, but thebooks themselves are designed to get non-native speakers to actually use Chinese on a day-to-day basis. You might want to send messages, write emails, conduct in-depthconversations, or give presentations in Chinese. If so, then volume 1 provides all the grammarneeded to communicate with native Chinese people at a basic to intermediate level. How to use the book:The book is divided into 140 units, and after every 7 units there is a summary page that canbe used to review what has been studied. For volume 1, students will start learning simplenouns, then simple sentences and finally finishing on intermediate level structures. Thetenses that are taught are 'present simple, present continuous. future simple and pastsimple'. In other words, by the end of the book, students should be able to talk and writeabout the past, present and future. In fact, there is enough information contained withinvolume 1 that students should be able to live and work in China without fear of makingany mistakes or not being able to communicate an everyday idea or opinion.
