It is a distinct loss to literature that no complete or satisfactory biography can be written. Unfortunately none of Mrs. Gaskell's letters can be published, for it was her earnest wish that they should never be made public, and her daughters, Miss Gaskell and the late Miss Julia Gaskell, who were appointed her literary executors, have always considered their mother's wish as sacred as a death-bed promise. From a perusal of some of those letters which I have been privileged to read, it is safe to say that the general impression of her noble character and gracious personality would not be materially altered. The same winsomeness shines through her letters which is to be found in her stories. The glory of England centres very largely around its literary shrines, and although so little has been written concerning Mrs. Gaskell, and that has centred mainly around the best known shrine at Knutsford, it is evident from her growing popularity, which was perhaps never greater than it is to-day, that other places associated with the novelist will be of interest to her many devotees both in England and America.
