On a quiet spring morning in May, Helen Lawson and her long-time friend Flo Patterson are peacefully strolling along Oak Street in the heart of downtown Bridgeville. Little do they know that as they are discussing hair appointments and spring flowers, Harley Baker, owner of the local ice cream parlor, is being brutally murdered less than a block away. Once Helen and Flo part company, Helen goes into the ill-fated shop and makes the gruesome discovery. What follows is a full-scale police investigation that involves Helen in a controversy, pits her against her police-officer son-in-law, and puts her at odds with the town mayor. In the meantime, a local "bad boy" is arrested for the crime and Helen races against time to clear the young man and bring the real killer to justice.
