This story is about a young girl leaving her homeland in Scotland and emigrating to Canada where she worked as a Federal Government employee for a quarter of a century. Her role was that of a Nurse working with different North American Indian tribes on six different reservations as well as working with the Inuit in the High Arctic. She was at one time Canada's most northerly situated nurse travelling for eight hours across the frozen sea by skidoo and sled to a land camp to administer to an Inuit family and seeing polar bear tracks en route and a seal hunt. In the 1970s there are probably not many woman who could lay claim to have been in near proximity to where famous explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Sir John Franklin once ventured. Life and death dramas were played out in these barren isolated communities and many times the nurse was alone without medical or nursing support. It is a human story that exposes the hardships felt by other cultures in a modern world and of other belief systems. It also portrays the rigorous life encountered by the non Inuit in a society that lacked the conveniences of everyday life that are taken so much for granted in the Southern Hemispheres. She met famous people, slept in an igloo, travelled by dog team, panned for gold and was presumed missing as she bobbed on a lake overnight in an aircraft.
