In the past fifty years, England has changed in a way that would have been thought impossible by the generation who lived through the Second World War. The rise to power of a Progressive political class has brought change in just about every sphere of English life. The most historically profound of the changes has been the migration to England of millions of people from around the world and the displacement of the English. Less than half the population of London and Birmingham is now English, and soon many other towns and cities will follow them. Some of the English population are becoming increasingly resentful and angry that such change has taken place without their consent. The poems in Necessary Words reflect this bitterness but do so in a manner that is understated and very English.
