It is not to be a biography of Newman. Much less is it to be a criticism or a censure of that great man. This is in no sense to be a controversial enterprise: for which, indeed, I have neither the ability nor the taste. This lecture will be much more of the nature of a valuation and a eulogium, so far as that even is seemly in my mouth toward a man who is so far above me. I live by admiration, hope, and love, and Newman has always inspired me with all these feelings toward himself and toward many of his works. So much so, that I intend this little essay of mine to be more of the nature of an acknowledgment and a tribute than anything else.
