Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the Board of Agriculture, for the Year 1879The intelligent farmer of to-day will not carry away from the soil, in gathered harvests, more plant-making material than can be replaced, after deducting the cost of their production, by the money they will bring him. He has begun to learn the nature of every product of his farm, whether it be produced from the soil directly, or come more remotely therefrom through the agency of his domestic animals. If he removes the material for plant-growth, he wisely replaces it and if he would reap an increased harvest, he adds a liberal annual interest to the cap ital stock with which he began.If there is one indication on our worn farms just now more promising than any other, it is the demand, coming in every direction, to know what and how to furnish the soil, at mini mum cost, with the material for producing maximum harvests. This is the essential question of the day with those who are endeavoring to build up our agricultural interests.
