Excerpt from Obituary Discourse on Occasion of the Death of Noah Henry Ferry: Major of the Fifth Michigan Cavalry, Killed at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863 The services connected with the interment of the remains of the late Major Noah H. Ferry, were held in the Presbyterian Church, Saturday, July 18, 1863. The exercises commenced with the following chant by the Choir: 1. With silence only as their benediction, God's angels come: When in the shadow of a great affliction the soul sits dumb. 2. Yet, would we say what every heart approveth - our Father's will, Calling to him the dear ones whom he loveth, is mercy still. 3. Not upon us, or ours, the solemn angel bath evil wrought: The funeral anthem is a glad evangel - the good die not. 4. God calls our loved ones, but we lose not wholly what he has given: They live on earth in thought and deed, as truly as in his heaven. The following selections of Scripture were then read: "Behold the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem, and from Judah, the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, the mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prodent, and the ancient, the captain of fifty, and the honorable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. They are exalted for a little while, but arc gone and brought low, they arc taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the cars of corn.
