Excerpt from Observations Upon the Climate of Icefield, Sussex, and Its Neighbourhood, From to 1870: With Some Additional Observations and Statistics of Rainfall, to the End of the Year 1885 The first edition of this work being now out of print, I am requested to issue a second, in which I have inserted a continuation of the monthly notices of the weather to the end of the year 1885. My meteorological instruments having been removed to Crowborough in the spring of 1872, I have not added any tabular matter in respect of temperature since the date of publication of the former edition. By the assistance of Miss Laura Day, since the year 1877, I am enabled to give a continuous register, in a series of tables, of the yearly, monthly, and seasonal rainfall at Uckfield for a long period, the results of which may be considered a very reliable record of the rainfall there, as well as, relatively, to its immediate neighbourhood. Chapters II. and III. have been revised, and for the most part re-written, in accordance with the continuation of the general observations for the district. Chapters V. and VI. of the first edition have been omitted. As to the former, I contemplate its forming the basis of a separate work, and with respect to the latter I consider it has already answered the purpose for which it was written.
