The slaveholding inter est had achieved a virtual victory. It secured all the immediate results for which it struggled, it acquired the power of offsetting, in the Fed eral Senate, two of the free States of the Con federacy, and the time could not be foreseen when, in the fulfillment of its compact, it would' yield any positive and practical advantage to the interests of Freedom.
