The preparation of these chapters has covered much time, and in many instances I have forgotten to indicate by quotation marks what has been borrowed. Without hesitation I acknowledge my obligations to many writers for some of the thoughts and even for the language in this book. This style of direct personal address, which is so marked, is the form in which the papers were originally cast, and is retained as not unsuited to the purpose of the book.
