Excerpt from On the Knowledge of Christ Crucified: And Other Divine ContemplationsBut while success may thus be counted ou, so far as a competent agency is concerned, the benefits likely to accrue to society are neither few nor unim portant. A little re¿ection will make it manifest, that mental enlargement of any kind, but especially a knowledge of those elements of science which be long to a man's particular profession, makes him more skilful in the practice of his art, and of course, more valuable in the market of free labour, than the man who is destitute of these advantages, while, at the same time, it points him out as the likeliest man to hit on improvements, which may multiply his own conveniencies, or tell to the advantage of society at large. There is, besides, a satisfaction in knowing the reasons of the appearances with which we are daily conversant, which cannot fail to be relished by all, except the incurably thoughtless. Such know ledge will contribute much to brighten the aspect of manual industry, and relieve the irksomeness of its daily toils, redeeming it from the degradation with which it is falsely associated, and inspiring the work man with a proper sense ofhis own individual impor tance, by raising him to the exaltations, and reward ing him with the joys, which are congenial to his rational nature.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
