Born in the Woking Maternity Hospital in Surrey, while Hitler's flying bombs were falling, if not dangerously close still falling all the same, Ian Ogilvy's early life was one of privilege and comfort. He then became an actor and all the privilege and most of the comfort flew out of the window. He starred in some memorable productions (Upstairs Downstairs, I Claudius, Return of the Saint) and some not so memorable productions (Revenge of the Blood Beast, Puppetmaster 5, The Haggard Falcon - aka The Tired Pigeon), both on screen and on television, most of them quite dreadful. It is a career that has taken him to some quite interesting places - Soviet Russia under Leonid Brezhnev, Iran under the Shah of Persia, California under Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Southall gas works (disused) - where he's met some quite interesting people who have said some quite interesting things to him. Among the people who said quite interesting things to him are the Queen, the Queen Mother, Boris Karloff, David Ogilvy, James Mason, Vincent Price, Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Christopher Plummer, Mike Reeves, Ronnie Corbett, Eric Morecambe (and to a slightly lesser extent Ernie Wise), Lionel Jeffries, Ray Cooney, Penelope Keith, Nigel Hawthorne, Trevor Howard, Tom Courtenay, Bobby Darrin, Michael Wilding, Jack Hawkins, Arthur Lowe, Peter Cushing, Derek Jacobi, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Maria Aitken, a policeman in Liverpool.Witty, clever and quite often hilarious - not unlike the author himself - Once a Saint draws back the curtain on a life lived on and off the stage.
