Excerpt from Ores of North CarolinaI cannot hope to have emulated the skill which he showed in the collation of his data, but my close relations with him for a long term of years, and my great respect for his memory, have prompted me to do whatever I could.In my long connection with the U. S. Assay Office, Charlotte, N. C., I have come into possession of a large fund of facts respecting the min ing resources of the State. These facts were freely given to him, and he reciprocated, so that there came 'in time to be, as it were, a common fund of information, and, to a great degree, a community of views.About one third of this mass of material had been put' into shape by him, and in compiling the rest, I have endeavored to represent him, whenever possible, I have avoided theorizing, that I might not misrepresent him.
