Excerpt from Origin and Early Progress of the Republican Party in the United States: Together With the History of Its Formation in Massachusetts: Memorial Addresses, Recurrence of Its Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, Celebrated at Mechanics' Hall, Worcester, Sept, 15, 1879 The preparation of the Historical Address by request of the State Central Committee, has been so hasty that there may be found therein many errors which a more careful compilation would have excluded. In the absence of all aid from my colleagues of the Convention of 1854, which it was impossible to get in season to report in print at the Republican State Convention on the 16th instant, I have done the best I could to get together some of the leading facts connected with the first organization, in such form as to give a general idea of its character and effect during the first few years of its existence. I have felt it unwise to cover up, or leave out, some of the real facts connected with the early consolidation of the party which have ever been obnoxious to some of our best supporters, but they are nevertheless facts. The first and sixth resolutions of the September Convention cover all the radical ground I have herein enlarged upon. I am alone responsible for the general sentiments and statements made in my Historical Address, which have not heretofore been made public.
