Excerpt from Outlines of Anatomy and Physiology: Translated From the French There are many excellent works upon the same subject, but they are too minute and abound in technicalities, to supply the deficiency arising from this cause, and at the same time furnish the medical student with an elementary work, has been my object in this translation. In the language of the author, the age and characters of some of my readers has, perhaps, made it necessary for me to pass rapidly over certain functions, but I am not aware of any important omissions in this sketch of the phenomena constituting life. My aim has been to be clear and concise, and from the nature of my work I have been compelled to limit myself to facts, and to pass over in silence the opinions and hypotheses, with the discus sion of which our treatises on physiology are so filled. It was my intention to have added a series of notes, but upon a reperusal of the work they do not seem so necessary as at first, the few remarks which have been appended will not, I trust, be found wholly useless.
