In 1551, a committee was appointed to reform the system of ecclesiastical laws, under which the Arch bishop was requested to prepare a book of articles, for preserving and maintaining peace and unity of doe trine in the church. The articles of religion were accordingly published in 1553, having received the approval of Convocation, and the royal assent. Thev were forty-two in number. A shorter catechism, con taining the sum of christian learning, was issued in Latin and English, the same year together with the articles. The body of ecclesiastical laws was completed, but not soon enough to receive the king's sanction.
