Excerpt from Outlines of the Life of Shakespeare, Vol. 2W'ith the exception of the contractions there are few peculiarities in the Latin documents that invite special remark. There are only a few unimportant anomalies in the orthography, the main diversities consisting in the use of unclassical forms of the language and of what are termed, in an old legal vocabulary, words signifi cant and known to the sages of the law, but not allowed by grammarians nor having any countenance of Latin. The whole of the English documents that are here given belong to a period after that in which the mere form of a spelling had an occasional grammatic signifi cance, and before there was an approach to an ortho graphical standard. Every one in the poet's time spelt according to his fancy, usually with a tendency to a literal redundancy, so that there was scarcely a word that did not appear in a variety of fashions, every section of the language being exposed to the universal irregularity. So widely diffused was this anarchy in the realms of penmanship that it would have been exceed ingly difficult to have lighted upon an individual who would have cared for the preservation of uniformity even in the record of his own family surname, and it may, indeed, be explicitly asserted that there was not a single other kind of word of any description which had then taken an established form by rule or precedent, - not one which can now be thought to possess the slightest biographical or historical value in the mere constitution of its letters. Neither is there any such value in the forms of the characters or in the desultory punctuation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
