Paeonia officinalis, commonly known as European peony (family: Paeoniaceae) native to south-eastern Europe, has been widely introduced elsewhere (including Kashmir) as a garden plant. Roots of Paeonia officinalis have been reported to possess abortifacient, anti-hypertensive and anti-ulcer activity. It has been used to treat liver disorders in traditional Unani, Homeopathic and Chinese system of medicines for curing bladder stones and jaundice, besides being used in stomach ache, diarrhoea, labour pains, nightmares, epilepsy, and lunacy. In our study we evaluated the hepatoprotective activity of the roots of Paeonia Officinalis.
