Excerpt from Papers Read Before the Lancaster County Historical Society, Friday, November 5, 1920, Vol. 24: Rafting on the Susquehanna, Minutes of the November Meeting, No. 9Rafting on the Susquehanna began as a steady business Within the first decade of our existence as a nation, and gradually grew to very large propor tions for 60 to 70 years and then gradually slackened for a decade or more and finally ceased altogether in about 1890, after which the sight of a raft or ark passing below Marietta was a great rarity.The period of its great prosperity was from 1790 to 1870 and it lasted entirely just about 100 years.The story of it is interesting and rather a romantic one.
