Paul Stohrer was born in Stuttgart in 1909 anddied there in 1975, from the 1950s to the 1970she was among that city¿s most eminent and successfularchitects. He took advantage of rebuilding phase after1945 for his professional development, and theboost given by the years of the economic miracleled to a peak in his architectural creativity. Todayhis name has largely disappeared from publicmemory in his field, and it is not well known thatmany of his buildings made a considerable contributionto Stuttgart¿s appearance. As he built several theatres and cinemas hewas familiar with the glamorous world of theatreand cinema, and he created exclusive familyhomes for clients on the scene at the time. Inaddition to this, his commissioned repertoire includedmainly commercial, office and factorybuildings, as well as interiors for restaurantsand shops. One of his best-known works is hishouse for the psychiatrist, filmmaker and collectorof contemporary art Ottomar Domnick inNürtingen near Stuttgart, which is now underthe aegis of the Stuttgart Staatsgalerie. It is difficult to place Stohrer¿s architecturalwork within the existing categories of contemporarybuilding history. Stohrer follows his ownpathways with his stylistic and formal repertoire, but the influence of Le Corbusier, and also OscarNiemeyer and others can be clearly discerned. As professor of design and interior design atthe Staatsbauschule in Stuttgart (now the Hochschulefür Technik) he inspired generations ofstudents with his unconventional teaching approach.Stohrer can be described as an »artistarchitect«. He saw architecture not just as an artistictask, but was also an artist in the more limitedsense, devoting himself to painting throughouthis lifetime.
