Excerpt from Paul's Estimate of the Pastoral Office: A Sermon Preached at the Ordination and Installation of Rev. Spencer L. Finney, as Pastor of the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church, New York
The Christian Episcopate is a spiritual Office established by God, and maintained in the world for high moral purposes. In Speaking Of this Office as spiritual we mean to express the three following, among other ideas. That it is an Office belonging to the church of God, which is a spiritual society, that spiritual men only should enter it, and that it is estab lished and perpetuated by God the Holy Spirit.
