Excerpt from Philo-Socrates, Vol. 1: A Series of Papers, Wherein Subjects Are Investigated Which, There Is Reason to Believe, Would Have Interested Socrates, and in a Manner That He Would Not Disapprove, Were He Among Us Now, Gifted With the Knowledge, Among the BoysThere are two grounds 'of objection to the contents of these pages, which, I know, will occur to many readers, and on which I am anxious to offer a few words of explanation. Some will say that the subjects discussed are beyond the comprehension of boys. Others, who may not agree in this objection, will say that the answers put into the mouths of the boys, if given at all, were given for and not by them.I must beg the first to allow me to assure them that they are under a mistake. I can speak from experience. Where the re¿ecting powers have been exercised, where thoughtfulness has been cultivated as well as memory, nothing is wanted but a qualified teacher to make such subjects both intelligible and interesting to boys. That they ought to be well informed upon these subjects when they quit school can scarcely be doubted by anybody.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
