Excerpt from Pietas Oxoniensis, Or, a Full and Impartial Account of the Expulsion of Six Students From St. Edmund Hall, Oxford: With a Dedication to the Right Honourable, the Earl of Litchfield, Chancellor of That University Happy then may I esteem myself in humbly dedicating the following pages to your Lordship's protection and patronage, not doubting but when all the particulars relative to some late Expulsions from that University, whereof your Lordship has so eminently distinguished yourself to be the nursing Father, shall be impartially submitted to your candor and judgment, that you will not suffer her Laws and Privileges to be disregarded, nor any of her Members to be oppressed or injured. And of this I am the more confident, from the polite and kind reception given by your Lordship to Mr Grove, (a Gentleman-Commoner of St Edmund-Hall, and one of the expelled Members of that Society, ) when he waited upon your Lordship in London, and you testified your approbation of his being readmitted into the University, if the consent of Mr Vice-Chancellor and his Assessors could be obtained: but this favour being denied, Mr Grove did not choose to give your Lordship any further trouble.
