It came before song, even before speech. The chant sprang up almost immediately after to dramatize its emotion, and the raw rhythms of the savage drum followed to intensify it. From its aboriginal pecinga, its swaying and tossing of limbs, the dance became not only the central passion but the most intense expres sion of the tribe, it was its religion as well as its ecstasy.
