Excerpt from Poet Lore, Vol. 45: A Quarterly of World Literature, Spring, 1939
Once again, Becquer went through a long period of abject poverty and actual starvation. Now and then he picked up a living as a house ~painter, and again did translating (he was a student of English literature and an enthusiastic devotee of Shakespeare), hack writing, and the like. His health broke down, and only the care of his friends kept him alive. Recovering, he worked on several ephemeral newspapers until 1860 when he joined the staff of El Contemporaneo, a journal of more solid pretensions.
