Mayo (1796-1852) was a British physiologist, anatomist and medical writer. He entered Middlesex Hospital as a surgical pupil in 1814 and also studied at Leyden University where he graduated with a DM degree. He became a house surgeon at Middlesex Hospital in 1818, and was surgeon there from 1827-42, during which time he founded the Medical School. In 1843 rheumatic gout compelled him to retire from his duties as lecturer on surgery after six years' tenure of the post and after seeking relief for his ailment from hydropathic treatment in Germany he became a physician at hydropathic establishments, first at Boppart and then at Bad Weilbach where he died. In the later years of his life he became interested in mesmerism and this book, first written in 1846, is an exposition on his views regarding the supposed cause of mesmeric and kindred phenomena. Reprinted from an American edition of 1852 based on the third London edition. Includes four pages of diagrams.
