Excerpt from Preaching and Hearing: And Other SermonsIn one word, then, by the Gospel is meant Christ's method of saving men from sin, which consists in making them members of the king dom of God, where they no longer act under the instigation of selfishness, but are invariably guided by the law of brotherhood. And this method of salvation was once and for ever, by Christ Himself, summarised and embodied in the Simple but all-comprehensive maxim, Love one another.Now you may not like this Gospel. You may not think much of it as a method of salvation. But if you say it is not the Gospel of Christ, you virtually maintain that the writers of the New Testament have given us, either wittingly or unwittingly, an erroneous version of His teach ing. If they did so wittingly, they were dishonest, if unwittingly, they were stupid.
