Excerpt from Precis of the Wars in Canada: From 1755 to the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, With Military and Political Reflections
He was educated at the charter-house and Woolwich, and obtained a commission in the Ar tillery in 1794. In the following year he was re moved to the Royal Engineers, and in 17 96 he em barked for the Cape of Good Hope, where he served under General Dundas, and was sent home with despatches from that officer in 1800, but immediately returned to the Cape and remained there until the colony was restored to Holland in 1803.
In 1805 an expedition was organised under the orders of Sir David Baird for the recapture of the Cape of Good Hepe, and Captain carmichael-smyth accompanied it as Commanding Engineer. After the defeat of the Dutch - troops, and subsequent surrender of Cape Town, Sir David Baird assumed the govern ment of the colony, and appointed Captain Smyth Acting. Colonial Secretary, in addition to his military duties, which office he retained until Sir David Baird was succeeded in the government by the Earl of Caledon.
