Hitherto the science of psychiatry has been too largely subjective. Many of its teachings, which are not based upon the studies just referred to, had better be forgotten. Naturally enough a knowledge of clinical phenomena precedes in time the knowledge of the fundamental facts underlying these phenomena. Morbid symptoms are not recognized by their scientific sub stratum, but in studying this substratum we are actuated by the desire to fathom the phenomena of disease.
