Religion is an important aspect in the life of many people, and it appears to be a universal phenomenon in all human societies. The earliest societies on record, of which we have evidence only through archeological remains, show clear traces of religious symbols and ceremonies (Giddens, 2000), Right from the days of the earliest societies, religion has a pervasive influence on human thought, behaviour, and action. The field of religion and spirituality is a genuine frontier for research, in which psychologists have much to offer and much to learn (Miller & Delaney, in press). It is a topic that already enjoys high public interest. The industrialized countries, so well provided for materially, have witnessed massive rises in the levels of stress, despair, mental ill-health, and suicide, while many developing countries like India, are beginning to feel the negative effects of materialism as well as its benefits. So the public interest in religion and spirituality is increasing world over as most people want to live with better health, greater inner peace, and need fuller sense of meaning, direction, and satisfaction. Increasing levels of affluence and materialism have failed to fulfill these needs (Myers, 2000). It is in this context that the present investigation was undertaken.
