Excerpt from Publications of the Modern Language Association of AmericaOn December 27, 1917, the Association authorized the appoint ment of a committee to consider and report to the Executive Council the feasibility of publishing an Index to the Publications. TO this committee there were appointed Professors E. H. Wilkins, Chairman, W. H. Chenery, Lane Cooper, William Kurrelmeyer, William W. Lawrence, and in accordance with its recommendation, duly approved by the Executive Council, the Index herewith pre sented has been compiled. The committee recommended That the Index contain, for each article, an author entry and as many subject entries as are necessary to indicate the main lines of scholarly interest. Papers read before the Association, but not printed in the Publications, were to be disregarded. However, as the earlier volumes of the Proceedings in the case of many papers contain extensive abstracts and reports, the compiler felt justified in including such titles. Furthermore, it seemed desirable to give brief references to various other matters of interest recorded in the Proceedings, such as International Correspondence Phonetic Sec tion, and the like. The specification concerning main lines of scholarly interest was also interpreted as broadly as the limits of space permitted. References to titles, or parts of titles, are to the page on which the particular article begins, incidental references to subjects treated within the article are either to the first occur rence of the term in question or to the most important passage in which it appears. Names of authors of articles appear in small capitals, complete titles of articles in italics. As some of the earlier volumes contain articles paged separately, it was necessary to desig nate these as pt. 2 or pt. 3 the Proceedings for the year 1884 were designated as Proc. '84, whereas those of the following year were treated as a part of Volume I. Other devices and abbre viations are deemed self-explanatory.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
