Excerpt from Purple and Fine Linen: A Novel
Sept. 21. - I wonder why mamma always crowds Pineside with people the first week in October. I think that she does so partly because we are pretty sure to have divine days at that period, and partly because if ever people are obtainable as country-visitors it is just then, - at least the sort which mamma likes to have about her.
Now that October is on the verge of appearing again, it seems very natural that certain preparations should be made among the "many-corridored complexities" of Pineside, preparations which I have observed speechlessly. For that matter, I usually observe all the features of mamma's domestic management with silence enough to quite charm a sphynx. It is very possible that if I should discover combustible indications among halls and pantries, some morning, of an intent on mamma's part to burn the house down, my objections to such a procedure would merely take the placid form of rushing for personal valuables.
