The theme for the 2000 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education was adherence to exercise programs and physical activity. There is now compelling research evidence attesting to the physical and mental benefits associated with regular exercise and physical activity, and this research has been summarized in the encyclopedic volume titled Physical Activity, Fitness and Health edited by Bouchard, Shephard, and Stephens (1994) along with the publication of Physical Activity and Health: A Report of the Surgeon General by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control in 1996.
