Excerpt from Quintin Matsys, the Blacksmith of Antwerp It was very cold the sky was covered with thick clouds, portending a heavy fall of snow, the wind howled and moaned as it rushed along the narrow streets, compelling those whose business kept them abroad to fold their cloaks closer round them and hurry forwards. Among those thus occupied was a tall, gaunt looking man his person was closel enveloped in a large cloak, which he had f0 ded tightly about and in which he buried his nose and chin there was just enough of his figure to be defined to show that he was as gaunt as he was tall, and he muttered exclamations suficiem to tell he was equally impatient. As he proceeded along the di¿'erent streets at a quick pace, he paused occasionally to look at the name of the street he happened to be in, and then went on again in the same manner ever and anon, as the wind swept past him, sharp and cold, venting an angry grunt at what he had no )ower to control.
