In consider able part it has been a matter of refining or clearing up points shown by teaching to admit of improvement. A considerable amount of new material has been added and a few less impor tant problems omitted by rearrangement, and condensation in places, the size of the book has not been appreciably increased. The chapter on Turnouts has been almost completely rewritten railroad practice in Turnouts has progressed materially in late years and complete revision of this chapter seemed advisable. The chapter on Connecting Tracks and Crossings has been ma terially extended. The chapter on Spirals has largely been rewritten and adapted to the use of the Spiral of the American Railway Engineering Association, the merits of which appeal to the author aside from the official sanction which establishes it as standard.
