The focus of this thesis is the normative regulation of language as an essential aspect for the state as well as for society. The legal framework for the use of gender-fair language by the state and private persons is analyzed. This encompasses EU, international, and German law, from the German Basic Law to (other) federal and (Lower Saxony¿s) state law. The central questions considered are: What is the state >allowed< and what is it >obliged< to do? What are private persons allowed/obliged to do?
