If civilization and probable duration are still gainsayed, their presentment by actual realities, neither speculative nor vainglorious, but considered historical truth, will submit facts, with deferential freedom of narrative, to the judgment of Americans, to whom alone these recollections are dedicated, without either disregard or solicitation of that foreign verdict by which our contemporaries in other countries are said to represent posterity.
