Excerpt from Relative Ignition Propensity of Test Market CigarettesThe Cigarette Extinction Method measures whether a cigarette, when placed on a heat-absorbing substrate, burns long and strong enough to cause ignition had it been dropped on a piece of furniture. A lit cigarette is placed on one of three substrates consisting of a fixed number of pieces of common filter paper. Failure is defined as the cigarette burning its full length.
