Excerpt from Religion: A Revelation and a Rule of LifeThe range of possible knowledge is so enormous that it is necessary to divide it into separate portions, and to investigate them separately. Thus we may study separately the phenomena of mind, or separately the phenomena of the nervous system, or the relations between the facts ascertained by the first set of studies and the facts ascertained by the second set of studies.The phenomena of mind consist of sensations, thoughts, processes of reasoning, emotions, will, the perception of the difference between right and wrong, the imperative of conscience. These can manifestly be investigated only by consciousness, by the inspec tion of what we really do or feel when we see, or hear, or admire a poem, or decide on a course of conduct, or reproach ourselves for a crime. All these phenomena are manifestly outside the sphere of physical science. Again, we may investigate the phenomena of the nervous system by means of anatomy and physiology. We discover the extreme complexity of the brain, the Spinal cord, the sensory and motor nerves, and the like. We observe, for instance, that the eye is a structure consisting of certain lenses, muscles, nerves, so and so distributed.
