Coauthors: Dr. Jitendra D. Vaghasiya (Ph.D.), Associate Professor of Pharmacology is actively engaged in teaching, research and service to his profession and Ms. Dipal Patel, a Young Researcher obtained her M.Pharm degree in Pharmacology in 2012. A study was designed to investigate Coenzyme Q10 treatment on scopolamine induced memory loss using Morris water maze test and passive avoidance test followed by estimation of Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), Nitric oxide (NO) and glutamate levels in mice. Coenzyme Q10 showed significant memory enhancing effect in mice that was indicated by significant increase in escape latency time in passive avoidance model and decrease in escape latency time in Morris water maze test at 50 & 100 mg/kg dose levels. Treatment with same doses of Coenzyme Q10 in mice showed decrease in MDA, Glutamate and NO levels and increase in GSH levels in brain tissue homogenates. This suggest that the antioxidant activity of the drug may prevent the oxidative neuronal damage in brain and therefore may be responsible for the anti-amnesic effect of Coenzyme Q10.
