The subject falls naturally into two parts, the first dealing with the origin, rise, and decay in Spain of the romance of roguery, commonly called the picaresque novel, the second deal ing with Spanish in¿uence and native de velopment beyond the Peninsula, in France, Germany, Holland, and England.
