Shadow is fundamental to architecture. How do we, assensory beings, respond to shadow psychologically?' This is a phenomenological investigation of shadow inarchitecture through photography, psychologicalinterpretation and poetic writing. It considersshadow interpretation, spirituality, beauty and theJapanese aesthetic, the sublime, masculine andfeminine readings, abstraction of shadow projection, the creative mind and depression, isolation, anddeath. Photographic images encourage the reader to'see' their surroundings anew to become more acutelyaware and fascinated by the everyday.Often we are not aware of our environment throughlack of appreciation, observation or interest, yet ifwe stop to take time to absorb the beauty of lowillumination found in architecture and nature we maybe able to apprehend a more profound experience ofour existence. As Juhani Pallasmaa says: 'Artoriginates in the emergence of the humanconsciousness of self and the encounter with the world.' This work tries to help navigate the darkness whichis our constant companion and becomes a contemplationof shadow as a real and present force in thearchitecture of our shadowlife.
