He was raised by his widowed mother who influenced him greatly. Although already living a devout life of study and prayer, Saint John officially became a monk when she passed away. He went into the wilderness where he wrote prolifically on the ascetic life. After many years he withdrew to a cave to live in complete solitude. He lived there for two years until he became ill and had to re-immerse himself in the world. He was ordained a priest in 386, and eventually earned the name "Chrysostom" (Golden-Mouthed) for his life-changing sermons. He became the bishop of Constantinople in 397 A.D. The royal court was extremely disturbed by Saint Chrysostom's passionate sermons and he was removed from the city by the empress. The second time the empress had him walked to a distant location. This proved to be too much for Saint John's frail body, and he ultimately died on September 17, 407 A.D. Saint John Chrysostom has had a huge influence on the Christian church. He is renowned for his inspiring words, his piety, and his denunciation of the abuses of authority. He is venerated as a saint in the Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran churches and more. Saint Chrysostom, His Life and Times is an important book about a significant Saint whose words and profound messages are still as life-changing today as they were in the fourth century A.D. Upon reading this book one feels as if having travelled back in time, navigating the age with Saint Chrysostom, attending his church, and walking with him to his death.
